Fevre Dream by George R.R. Martin
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Fevre Dreamis not your typical George RR Martin book. I decided to try it anyway. Who does not enjoy a great vampire novel anyway, right?
As many of the people that read my reviews know, I love to learn thing (useless knowledge) when I read. I was surprised what great detail Martin delved into on the steamship culture and the Mississippi River. Wow! So much info I never knew and he explains it in a very interesting way that anyone can appreciate.
I also loved Martin’s original take on all things vampire. He has a very new spin on the anatomy, history, and creation of vampires. I love the way this man thinks.
1857. The basic story is told from a third person limited objective point of view mostly centered on Captain Abner Marsh. MArsh has seen some bad luck with his fleet of steam ships and dreams of owning the fanciest and fastest steam ship on the Mississippi. One night he is approached by a mysterious stranger that wants to make all his dreams come true. All Marsh has to do is pledge his loyalty to this strange man.
Fevre Dream could be described as the unique offspring of Anne Rice and Mark Twain. The novel was a lot of fun to read. I recommend it for history and vampire buffs alike.
I ultimately gave this book a 4 out of 5 stars. I would suggest it for fans of mystery, historical fiction and vampires.
