Once There Were Wolves by Charlotte McConaghy
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
McConaghy had me at wolves and Scottish Highlands. I did enjoy this book. I will say it will not be for everyone. It does become a bit graphic in parts.
Anyone who has read my reviews before, knows I love to learn something when I read. I was familiar with wolves and their impact on the environment, especially pertaining to Yellowstone, but McConaghy took this knowledge to the next level. It was not only interesting, but entertaining.
Inti is a wildlife biologist tasked with reintroducing wolves to the Scottish Highlands. She gets less than a warm welcome by the natives as they are worried about the impact the wolves will have on their sheep and cattle. Int is determined to prove them wrong. Something beyond Inti’s control goes wrong and she has to decide just how far she will go to protect her project and the wolves.
I feel as if the backstory of Inti and Aggi (twins) took a little too long to uncover. I also felt that the human love story in the book was confusing and a little weird. However, I really thought that McConaghy did a fabulous job creating a character out of the wolf packs themselves that forces the reader to really become invested in the outcome and helps us understand why Inti will go to extremes to protect them.
I recommend this book for suspense and wildlife fanatics. Again, it is not for the faint at heart.
