Pitch Perfect and Persistent!: The Musical Debut of Amy Cheney Beach by Caitlin Delems
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Amy Cheney Beach was a young musical savant whose parents did not allow her to submerge herself in music at a young age. Her parents believed that a young lady should not draw such attention to herself. At age 16, her parents allowed her to perform at Boston’s Music Hall.
I did love the story itself, but the delivery was not kid friendly. Amazon claims that it is for 7-10 year olds. I read the book with my 9 year old daughter who is extremely bright. She found the book very frustrating. There were a lot of big and unfamiliar words that were completely unnecessary to telling the story.
Pitch Perfect and Persistent is beautifully illustrated by Alison Jay and a wonderful story written by Caitlin DeLems. My biggest suggestion is that when writing for 7-10 year olds, please write at the appropriate level.
